Meet P.E. Teacher, Mr. Lance Schoenwald

Minor league baseball umpire, baseball coach, ballet dancer.  What teacher fills these shoes…….our amazing gym/fitness teacher, Lance Schoenwald.

Lance grew up in North Dakota with his parents and three brothers. He played high school and college baseball as a catcher attending Minot State University and Williston State College. After college, in 1996, he was the head baseball coach at Minot. While he had his teaching certificate, as a full-time coach, he couldn’t teach full-time so he would substitute teach.

In 2006, he began officiating minor league baseball games full time, moving to Las Vegas, Sioux Falls, Overland, and ultimately Colorado. He was a full-time umpire until 2012. Lance is still heavily involved in officiating. He manages his own umpire camp that is the only independent camp endorsed by minor league baseball.

Lance lives five miles southeast of Parker on acreage with his two horses and three dogs. During his spare time, he loves anything active: hiking, skiing, fishing, hunting, etc. He also loves living life in a small farmers’ community.

One thing you may not know about Lance is that as a child, he was in ballet for six years. Growing up in remote North Dakota, a woman would come and teach the local girls ballet and Lance decided to join in. He says to this day his flexibility has never gone away and tributes ballet to the fact that he has never had a sprained ankle or similar injury.

As for Lance’s bucket list? He acknowledges how blessed he is to have done so much in life. He’s traveled to almost every Canadian province and U.S. state. Several years ago, he almost went to umpire in Korea for a month. He would really like to officiate overseas in some type of American games venue.

Please say “hi” to Lance when you see him at school. We truly appreciate him and are lucky to have some  amazing teachers at our school! Thank you Lance for all you do!!!!

Congratulations Destination Imagination Teams!

We had three Destination Imagination teams represent Sage Canyon this year. At this year’s regional tournament, our sixth grade team came in 4th place! Our intermediate team took 6th and earned the Engineering award for their outstanding performance with design and innovation!

Destination Imagination is a global competition which is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams showcase their solutions at a tournament.

To learn more about Destination Imagination, please contact Ms. Fairchild and Ms. Wolfgang.

Meet 2nd Grade Teacher, Ms. Paula Bishop

9610DEDF-1351-4FCF-87FB-7FC0E170E134This month we have the pleasure of getting to know Paula Bishop. Paula lived in California when she was younger, but Colorado is her home. She started high school in Elizabeth, CO. She had horses, dogs, cats, and a bunny. Paula’s mom is a teacher and growing up she would tell Paula that she would be a great teacher. When Paula went to college at UNC in Greeley, her choices were either teaching or athletic training, but then she took chemistry and teacher it was! We are so happy it was and couldn’t agree more with her mom!

Paula spent a summer living in Kenya toward the end of her college years. She lived with a Kenya family, and it was a totally different life then she had ever experienced. She spent her time at the Mother Teresa Orphanage. There she saw what a big impact being a teacher could be.

Paula did her student teaching at Cherry Creek and worked for two years at Academy Charter. This is her second year at Sage Canyon as a 2nd grade teacher.

She met her husband at their really good friends’ wedding. She was the coordinator and he was the DJ. A year and half later those same friends were in their wedding!

Paula loves baking, spending time with her husband, and taking walks with her 7-month-old puppy, Satch. She got Satch from Mrs. Vaughan’s animal shelter. She also loves to travel and went to Italy this past summer.

We are so happy that we have Mrs. Bishop at Sage Canyon to teach our kids. Make sure when you see her to say “Hi!”
